Don Smith first picked up a camera 36 years ago and he has visited Paris on and off for 38 years before moving there. He earned his BFA in photography at the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI).

Ansel Adams and Minor White established the first accredited photography program in the US at SFAI. One of his first instructors was Pirkle Jones, a gentleman who'd been Ansel Adams professional assistant for 6 years.

At the age of 18 he did a nude figure study in Black/White that the editors of Zyzzyva would later include with such world renowned artists as David Hockney, Brett & Cole Weston and Herb Ritts.

Accepted into the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) in his early 20's he was a member for 14 years, one of the founding members of the National Technology Committee and was the very first Internet Consultant to the National ASMP office in NYC.

Using the Internet via a Unix command line in the late 80's he slowly became a geek. Because of his photographic background and knowledge with computers, in 1993 Aldus invited him to be 1 of only 8 people in North America to Alpha test Photostyler v2.0, which then extended to Beta testing.

In July 2002 a Web site he authors about Paris was given a glowing review in
Liberation, one of the largest newspapers in France.

He has experience with the 4x5 view camera, Nikon film bodies (F to F3HP), the Nikon D2X, D300 and D-70, Hasselblads, Coolpix 5700, the Widelux F7 panoramic camera and panoramic software in addition to traditional master B/W printing, dye transfers and Polaroid image transfers.

His clients have included advertising agencies, graphic designers, architects, engineering firms and magazines for both regional and national campaigns. Clients have included Weyerhauser, O'Brian Watersports, US West, Kramer Chin & Mayo and Storek & Storek, SF.
